In 1954, just as his racing career was getting underway, Phil Hill was diagnosed with an ulcer. If he didn't quite, his doctor warned. He could hemorrhage. His temperament was ill-suited to idlness, and he gravitated to the family garage where a demanding project awaited. He restored his aunt's 1931 Le Baron Pierce-Arrow, the lustrous object of his childhood admiration.
