The Car That Brought Phil Hill Out of Retirement

Phil Hill was on the verge of competing on the world stage when a family doctor found an ulcer and urged him to quite racing or risk a hemorrhage. He returned to Santa Monica and worked as a part-time mechanic while restoring his aunt's Pierce-Arrow LeBaron Convertible Town Cabriolet. He was beginning to feel what he called "the strain of inactivity" in the fall of 1954 when he received in the mail a photo of this Ferrari with a note attached: Guaranteed not to cause ulcers.
