Phil Hill raced three times in the Carrera Panamericana, the so-called "Race of Death" that wound its way nearly 2,000 miles along the spine of Mexico. The fastest cars in the world tore through the backcountry, where some locals had never seen a car before. The photo above, showing Hill in a well-worn Ferrari coupe, was published in a 1959 edition of Fuller Brush Magazine.
