Team Orders

Wolfgang von Trips (above) was leading Phil Hill in the 1961 Dutch Grand Prix when the phone rang in the Ferrari pits. It was Enzo Ferrari calling from Modena. On his orders team manager Romolo Tavoni held out a message board dictating the order of finish: "Trips-Hill." With the first Ferrari win of the season within reach, the team did not want to risk any entanglements. Hill bristled at the notion of team orders, and later stated publicly that he would not obey them. Discuss.
